Democracy in Franco’s TP OK Jazz
The organizational genius of Franco Lwambo Luanzo Makiadi is credited with keeping the massive band together when the thing to do for bands then was disintegrate per recent articles of note. Franco was able to achieve this by exercising a form of democracy that is rare in the musical world.While Franco was the undisputed leader of TP OK Jazz, he allowed the other band members to enjoy the limelight too. Members of the band were able to cut albums and some even had their names and photographs appearing on the album sleeves. It was therefore their band, not Franco’s.
